Dr. Pompeu Casanovas is Director of Advanced Research, professor of Philosophy and Sociology of Law at the UAB Law School, founder of the IDT-UAB in 2005, and at present its Head. He has 20 years of experience conducting research on legal sociology and philosophy, pragmatics, and AI and law. He has been Principal Investigator of over 50 national, European, and international projects. He has published over 10 books and more than 150 scientific articles in the areas of legal philosophy, legal sociology, intellectual history, and AI & Law. His recent publications concern the development of legal ontologies to implement Semantic Web technologies; models of governace to implement security and data protection in the Web; and mediation, Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) and crowdsourcing to foster citizens' democratic participation.
He has been General Coordinator and co-director, with Elena Lauroba and Jaume Magre, of the Catalan White Book on Mediation (2009-2011). He is General Editor, with Giovanni Sartor, of the Law, Governance and Technology Series (at Springer Verlag), and the Editor of the research series La razón áurea. Derecho, Ciencia,Tecnología (in Spanish, Editorial Comares). He is also Editor-in-Chief, with Josep Monserrat and Xavier Serra, of the Journal of Catalan Intellectual History (2010), and Co-Editor with Tom Bruce, Ginevra Peruginelli and Enrico Francesconi of the Journal of Open Access to Law (JOAL, 2013). He belongs to the Scientific Board of Directors of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Law, Science and Technology (2012-2017).
Dr. Pompeu Casanovas holds a Doctorate in Philosophy at the UAB, and he carried out post-doctoral research as Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Bari (and Rome, 1987), UCSD (California, 1990-91), and Stanford (California, 2000-2001). He has been also VS at the University of Bologna (CIRSFID, 2006), CNR (IRSIG, 2006), and Visiting Professor at Victoria University (Melbourne, 2012-2013). He has been recently appointed Adjunt Professor at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (2014).
