The
UAB Institute of Law and Technology has emerged out of the
former UAB Sociolegal Studies Group (GRES), a member of
the CNRS European Network Réseau Européen
Droit et Société (REDS, CNRS, Collège
de Recerche n. 1036). The GRES began its research activities
in 1992 with “Videos in the Courtrooms”, a program
to improve research and learning methods at Spanish Law
Schools. In this line, our Laboratory of Analysis of Qualitative
and Audio-Visual Data, created in 1994, continues to develop
methods for data analysis, incorporating new technologies
and techniques.
In our perspective, obtaining empirical data from fieldwork
is crucial to analyse legal expert knowledge and develop
solutions for legal and professional organizations. From
the very beginning, therefore, ethnography of legal institutions
has been one of our distinctive methods of research. The
GRES applied it in a number of research projects involving
members of the public prosecution, the judiciary, and the
bar associations.
